Put Up The Tree
And call it a year
When navigating a tricky season, it’s hard to know what to do. I have been searching for profound words of wisdom to help me through a very turbulent time, reaching for ancient philosophers, award winning poets and great minds to be the salve to a thought that has been on loop in my mind since January, the seemingly never ending question ‘if the first three months of the year are anything to go by, how am I going to get through 2025’? But the comfort I sought didn’t come from wisdom. It came from this meme:
Sensational. No notes.
Since my last post it has been one of the most stressful, exciting, heart-wrenching, discombobulating periods of my life to date, where I have felt I have been permanently stuck on life’s tumble dryer.
So this month the round up is going to be a little different, and I’m hoping once eclipse season is over, Mercury and Venus turn direct, and the chaos subsides just a smidge, we’ll get back to regular programming.
March’s Musings 🎥 🌸
The Oscars: I haven't stopped thinking about the Oscars and how to me, the way the award for best actress played out was nearly the exact plot of the film The Substance. Although Anora was fantastic and Mikey Madison was brilliant, Demi Moore totally deserved that Oscar. If you haven't seen The Substance yet I highly recommend it (and Anora is great too.)
Flow: Something the Oscars got right was that Flow won best animation - and was Latvia’s first Oscar win! Not only is it a hit for humans (the depth of story telling and the deeper meaning behind each animal is just stunning) but animals have not been able to get enough of it! My cat Little Bo Peep loves TV time only because for her it really means lap time, but when I put on Flow, she could not take her eyes off of it.
The director Gints Zilbalodis’ whole Twitter account is wonderful, but this and this are my favs off his page.
David Lynch: A Retrospective: I've been really inspired by David Lynch lately. Nashville's local independent theatre The Belcourt did a retrospective of some of his movies in memory of his passing. I've also recently did a course in Transcendental Meditation (big shout out to the TM queen Donielle Freeberg!) which was something David Lynch was passionate about. It has been the thing that I think has kept my feet on the ground and stopped me from drifting into space during the upside down season of late. Full admission: I'd never seen Twin Peaks until now, and I'm absolutely adoring it. Lynch's films are wild, and his life is equally as crazy. I think his bravery to create out-there, wacky art has really inspired a freedom in me to do things differently, even when others might want to fit into the norm.
Spring in Nashville: Spring is in full form here in Nashville, and I have had moments of complete euphoria when seeing the cherry blossoms pop a different colour every time I turn a corner. I've also been obsessed with the magnolias in my neighbourhood, and every time I see one, I cannot stop myself from singing the stunning song by Gabrielle Aplin, which I recommend you have on repeat for the whole of spring.
Reading Corner 📖
Jennifer Grey's Memoir: I've been reading Jennifer Grey's "Out of the Corner" autobiography and haven't been able to put it down! The prologue nearly broke my heart and the stories she shares are really worth reading. Dirty Dancing is one of my favourite movies of all time, and it's interesting to draw parallels between events in her life and her character in the film, and how even though she is such a brilliant actress, it feels like you're reading something written by a close personal friend.
Thursday Murder Club: I finished the fourth book of "The Thursday Murder Club," which provided me with so many giggles. Though my husband calls it "cozy crime," if you want a little bit of intrigue with quite a lot of laughs, I thoroughly recommend it.
Little Joys 🪺
It's mini eggs season, which is proving great for the taste buds, terrible for the sugar spikes. 🐣
One of my favourite activities is walking at sunset, seeing deer graze quietly beside little voles making their nests. It's amazing how something so big and something so small can exist in the same vicinity and not trample over one another. If only humans could be like that. 🌅
My overwhelm with social media continues to grow. I hope that Neptune leaving Pisces will mean that our relationship with social media will change, but until that point, I have become steadily addicted to the New York Times games which feels more interactive than mindless scrolling. 🧩
Quotes For It 📣
“And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.”
— John Steinbeck, East of Eden
“When nothing is certain, everything is possible”
— Donielle Freeberg
“And seeing the snail which everywhere doth roam,
Carrying his own house still, still is at home,
Follow (for he is easy paced) this snail,
Be thine own palace, or the world's thy jail.”— A section of To Sir Henry Wotton by John Donne (via of Austin Kleon)
And, most importantly, if it all gets too much, just put up a tree and call it a year.
Thank you for following the crumbs with me. I can’t wait to share more with you soon but till then, take it easy.
Love,
